Construction glossary term

Rough-In

Rough-in refers to a phase of a construction project when ductwork, plumbing, and wiring are installed to ensure space constraints or accessibility issues are addressed. To initiate the rough-in stage, framing of a project must be completed, including interior wall framing, floor joists, sub-flooring, ceiling joists, and roof rafters. Rough-in work often coordinated by a project manager so that subcontractors are not getting in each other's way. Planning and coordination help maximize efficiency and productivity.
